Since Roman times, the bright green Mentha spicata has been an indispensable mint variety in the kitchen. It is a sweet-smelling perennial up to 1 meter high with elongated to oval leaves. Purple, pink or white flowers appear in long spikes. Spearmint and peppermint are related and both belong to the most popular scents and flavors in the world. Spearmint gives chewing gum its typical taste. This popular flavoring is widely cultivated in Japan, China, North America and Brazil and is also widely used as tea in North Africa and the Middle East. The oil has a characteristic scent: warm and spicy. The yield of essential oil for spearmint is approximately 0.5%. This means that 200 kg of plant material is needed for 1 liter of oil. The final color of the spearmint oil is light yellow to light green.
