Sandalwood is a tree with aromatic wood and roots originating from India and Indonesia. Sandalwood is inextricably linked to its country of origin, India, where it is processed into incense, fragrant wood carvings, and essential oil; authentic, pure sandalwood oil is traded at government auctions. Besides Indonesia, India produces 90% of the world's sandalwood, mainly in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; the oil content of sandalwood is approximately 4% in the heartwood and about 6% in the roots. Sandalwood is a valuable raw material for perfumery.
